Welcome to The Biscuit, a blog about having fun with food. We’re going to look at nourishment from every angle - restaurant, chef, farmer, patron, farmer, student and more.
Hopefully you’ll learn a lot of interesting facts about food all around, but be especially excited if you live in the Triangle area of N.C. We’ll talk about tasting chocolate in the first post - a food we all love - but we’ll also reveal where you can sample and purchase chocolate around Chapel Hill and Raleigh.
In the upcoming weeks, look forward to having some laughs as we try to show you all about eating 6-pound burritos, cooking with local ingredients, what makes a good dining hall and more.
And don’t forget to check out the Biscuitionary. It’s small now, but it will grow to be a developed glossary with each post. There, you’ll find little notes and briefs about a lot of the topics covered in this blog. Each term might have a map, contact information or additional links to topics we discuss.
In case you’re interested, the idea for The Biscuit had been brewing for a while. It wasn’t until I started taking an online journalism class at UNC-Chapel Hill that it materialized. Additionally, if you want to know a little about me, here it is:
I’m Alex Kowalski (the guy to the right holding cocoa beans). I study journalism and struggle to understand biology at UNC. I also take a few swings at fiction writing, but my professor usually just shakes his head.
Food dominates my thoughts and usually dictates how my day evolves. Being from Boston, I came down to much a smaller town (Chapel Hill) expecting a lackluster restaurant scene, but finding great food here was a surprise. I hope you can follow me on The Biscuit as I show you why this area packs a punch when it comes to eating.
Besides studying and eating, I spend most of my time writing for the Daily Tar Heel and rowing (if you know what an erg is, feel my pain ) as a member of the university’s men’s crew team. I hold the coveted position of team food and culture adviser.
That’s it. I hope you enjoy taking a bite out of The Biscuit.
